About

Bio

Picture
Milena Blomqvist (1973) is a qualified Life Coach and Shiatsu Therapist. She has an extensive knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Enneagram and the connection between the Mind, Body, Heart and Spirit. She also has a Ph.D. degree in biology and numerous scientific publications in her name. Milena was born and grew up in Finland. Having resided for some time in the United Kingdom, she now lives in the Netherlands with her husband, daughter and her longing for connection, purpose and peace of mind. Although she considers herself still very much a work in progress (and expects to stay that way for the rest of her life), she has picked up a thing or two along the way that she feels are worth sharing.

Learning to Relax into Life

I knew something wasn't quite right...

PictureCouch potato
When, at the age of 9, I received my first 'imperfect' A minus on a test and all I wanted to do was cry and hide forever - and when that feeling never went away ...I knew something wasn't quite right.
When I hadn't driven a car for 10 years because I was too afraid drive ...I knew something wasn't quite right.
When I had to have my daily fix of chocolate and found myself sitting in my comfy chair watching 4-5 hours of TV a day - for years on a row - ...I knew something wasn't quite right.
When I was constantly worrying about whether there would be food available if I were hungry, and when my dress size went up two sizes and I couldn't get the weight off anymore ...I knew something wasn't quite right.
When I had given birth to a beautiful baby girl and still felt down, depressed and chronically worried more than a year later ...I knew something wasn't quite right.
When I was fighting with my daughter almost daily, exploding at least once a week, yelling at the top of my lungs to a 3-year old ...I knew something wasn't quite right.

Life always gives us hints & signs

Life (or Spirit) is always communicating with us, giving us signs whether we are on track with our lives or straying off our path. At first we get small hints - often no more than a vague feeling telling us to go this way rather than that way. If we ignore those hints, the signs will get bigger - we might start noticing recurring negative thoughts, a feeling of dissatisfaction, small aches here and there in our bodies. And if we ignore those signs, we start getting into trouble: feelings of freedom, happiness and joy turn into fear, insecurity and anger; negative thought, limiting beliefs and worries occupy our minds; we experience more pain and develop illnesses in our bodies.

When I found myself craving more than 10 hours of sleep night after night and crying every Sunday because I knew I had to go to work again on Monday - I knew something wasn't quite right. When I nearly had a burnout in 2001 during my PhD research I knew this was a serious wake-up call. Something had to change - I had no clue what, so I started listening and looking for signs. It took a few years of trial and error where I slowly learned to listen to my inner voice again and above all, learned to take the hints sooner! In the end, I quit my career in science and started my own company Spirit in Matter in 2005.

Education & Influences

PictureEnneagram
The first seeds of increased sensitivity and body awareness had been sown when I started practicing Tai Chi. Another important impulse came in the form of the Enneagram in 2002. The next logical step was to study the philosophy of Crazy Wisdom teacher G.I. Gurdjieff and to practice his Movements. Around this time I also started doing Chi Neng Qi Gong. In the intensive period of study and (personal) development that followed, I was forced to take a long hard look at all ideas I had about myself and people around me. Essential Coaching really helped me during this time, so I decided to start working as a Coach myself. In 2004, I completed my studies and became a certified Essential Coach. In addition, I completed my Shiatsu Massage studies in 2005 and became a licensed Shiatsu Therapist in 2007. In the same year I also became a certified Healing Arts Therapist (Liquid Lights Frequencies).

In the meantime, I had also rediscovered my passion for music. During my childhood & teens, I played the piano for 15 years. I started taking singing lessons in 2005. In 2015 I suddenly felt like learning to play the guitar. I cannot but marvel at the profound effects music, sound and vibrations can have on our thoughts, feelings and our bodies and whenever possible, I try to incorporate this in my work.

Along the way, I also became a mother in 2008, to a beautiful, strong-willed daughter. It probably comes as no surprise that this has given more than enough material and opportunities for spiritual growth. Participating in a week of Intensive Primal Therapy in 2014 finally helped me to relax some deep-seated childhood issues.

The work of Abraham-Hicks (Law of Attraction) has been a great source of inspiration for many years. In 2010 my (childhood) dream of becoming a writer became active again, so I stared writing short stories and blogs. I have also come more in contact with my own sensitivity and intuition. Inspired, amongst others, by David Deida I am practicing to let go of all preconceptions about what is needed or what is supposed to happen, so that I can be open for inspiration and surrender to life and the unexpected.

Lessons learned (so far)

Picture
  • We are responsible for our own process
  • It is OK to ask for help.
  • We may not be able to change the facts of a given situation, but we can change our perception.
  • Relaxing our Minds, Bodies and Hearts is a matter of practice.
  • Our bodies, experiences and the world that we see are all mirrors of ourselves.
  • If we dare to step into the unknown, everything changes.
  • Every moment is a good moment to practice being in the now and embracing the current situation.
  • Connection is everywhere – as long as we stay connected to our Selves (and even when we forget).
  • Why would we settle for less, if we can be everything?

Benefits
of learning to take the hints

If I look back on the process that started somewhere around 2001, it has been and still is a bumpy ride. Every so often I almost regret ever getting started (as if I actually had a choice in the matter). I still encounter those moments, especially when life asks me to reach further, go deeper and get even more out of my comfort zone. But I can honestly say, it really is all worth it.

Viewed from a linear perspective, I started out dissociated from my body, feeling empty, flat and low on energy; living only in my mind, being disconnected from my anger and other emotions. I was addicted to food, chocolate, tv and comfort, gaining weight easily and struggling to keep it off. I loathed exercise, suppressing my own life force. Fear was very active in my life, I was a hypochondriac, not trusting this body to do its job. I was afraid that something would happened to the people I loved, too afraid to drive... Do I need to continue?
Picture
Today, I am still work in progress. But I also recognise that a lot has changed. Today, I feel Spirit in my life again. I have a deep personal knowing that I am a spiritual being inhabiting a physical vessel. I trust that there is a plan and purpose to my existence and that this life is a part of a bigger picture. I am learning more and more to stop trying to control life, other people and circumstances, letting go and relaxing into life as it is. My body feels energetic and healthy; I'm in far better shape than I was 10 years ago. I am more sensitive and I feel more - learning to allow and feel all emotions.
I feel grateful.
I live more in the now.
And yes... I am also driving a car again... ;-)

What about you?
What's your story?
